3-01-15: Remembering Who We Are

Scripture: Psalm 25:4-10; Jeremiah 31:31-34

On the second Sunday in Lent, the prophet Jeremiah proclaims that the days are coming when God will make a new covenant with Israel—a covenant written on the heart. No one will say: "Know the Lord, for all will know the One written on their hearts." Is this wishful thinking? A religious fairy tale? Or is this yet another way of stating the age-old paradox: We only understand who we are when we understand who/what God is. But, at the same time, we only understand who/what God is when we understand who we are. As God writes this new covenant on our hearts, we remember who we are...and who we have always been. This Sunday, we are going to use the Disney classic The Lion King to tease out these religious insights. Mufasa claims that Simba has forgotten who he is because he has forgotten him. Of course, Simba thinks about Mufasa all the time because Simba feels responsible for his death. Could it be that if we are to truly remember Christ, we too are to remember who we are? See you Sunday.
